Tonight the Calgary Flames will be in San Jose to take on the Sharks as they kick off a three game road trip. The Flames are at rock bottom, while the Sharks have been on a roll winning six straight games, so tonight’s outcome shouldn’t be a surprise to many given how both teams have been playing.

The Flames are looking to add some depth to defense and have called up Brett Carson from Abbotsford to do so. Things fell nicely into place for Carson after Bouwmeester’s departure as Derek Smith is on the IR, and Mark Giordano is about to welcome a child.

Carson is in his final season of his two year $1.15 million contract; he was sent to the Heat after training camp this season and tonight’s game will be just his 3rd NHL game as member of the Flames. Based on the fact that he is at the end of his contract, Carson should treat tonight’s game as an audition because he’ll be an unrestricted free agent going into next year and will need a new contract.

The Flames have recently signed goaltender Laurent Brossoit from the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League to a 3 year entry level contract at $566,700 per season, with an AAV of $925,000. He was the Flames 6th round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and has been pretty solid in his 3rd season with the Oil Kings.

With Kiprusoff’s imminent departure, it seems like management is panicking, although Kiprusoff aside, had the Flames not signed Brossoit they could have potentially lost the rights to him. The Flames have been stacking up goalies from just about everywhere and currently have 9 on the books.

Here is the current list(in no order):
Kiprusoff
Ramo
Irving
Berra
Brossoit
Gilles
Ortio
Macdonald
Taylor

The Flames should have plenty of options for them carrying forward between the pipes, though it is rather difficult to judge goaltending talent early on in a players career. For the time being, Calgary will have Karri Ramo joining the squad this summer and should entertain extending Macdonald who has been playing well for them.

The way things are going, the Flames may begin to call up more and more players to give them some NHL experience. While guys like Baertschi will be playing right through his AHL season with the Heat, a few others might be given the chance to play in the big league.

That’s all for today folks, thanks for reading!
