You can’t Spell Apathetic without Pathetic

It’s not longer about running out of options for the Winnipeg Jets, that’s obvious as the coach has none anymore unless he’s a magician and can pull a rabbit out of a hat. It may take magic or perhaps some darker form of sorcery to cure the Jets of the complete apathy that engulfs their play lately. If you are a Jets fan you’re probably open to just about any option and if you have a few perhaps send them Claude Noel’s way.

Perhaps Montoya can summon up some distant family Cuban ritual to ignite the Jets sticks? Maybe Jokinen and Miettinen can get some extract of reindeer horn for the team to drink? Then again maybe Kane can buy everyone a ‘money phone’ so they can at least start to communicate.

Whatever the solution the Jets have no chemistry, cohesion or synergy in their collective game.

More troubling is the apathetic play which takes over the entire team when it comes to all the ‘little things’ that must be done to win games. More times than not this season, especially the last six games, the Jets simply don’t care to put the effort in to compete. The opposition does and one has to wonder if they know the size of fight in the dog called the Jets just isn’t there.

Tonight the Habs made it look easy, just as the Rangers, Islanders, Hurricanes and Capitals have done lately. Their opposition, the Jets, was not willing to take the little risks to do the things that win games.

It’s a compounding problem for Winnipeg. Right now when a mistake is made the puck almost surely ends up in the net or a player is in the box. The latter means the puck will be in the back of the net shortly.

The situation is bad as discussion between parties who normally agree and see a pretty similar picture are very far apart. Tonight myself and the guys at Arctic Ice Hockey had a long twitter debate about the problems. Team, goaltending, forwards, defense and shot quality- the latter being the hotter topic.

We’re all looking at the same picture, the same stats, and the same play trying to come up with some explanation and really there is no definitive one. The team really sucks right now and for many reasons. Imagine trying to coach this group.

It all comes back to caring and if you took a survey I bet the only guy fans would say showed he cared would be Evander Kane. Bogosian a distant second and neither of these guys wear an ‘A’. So just as I wrote earlier today about the coach needing to show his mettle so do the players and wear was the leadership tonight?

When does some one on this team take responsibility, let alone take charge? Back in the infancy of the season we heard about the leadership group from the coach and players. Where are they now? Why are they silent?

Looking for answers when it comes to the puzzling problem that is the Winnipeg Jets is difficult enough for anyone right now. However when the players, mired in a six game losing streak, can’t show disgust and disdain at their play when they know it’s bad what happens next? Well it goes back to apathy and eventual that becomes contagious with the fans just as it has on the team.

It would behoove someone to get control of this situation as should apathy really take hold far more bad things than good will happen to get at the core of the problem.
