Chasing the Pack

Jersey, Montreal and Pittsburgh.

Three teams the Flyers have been chasing since their 0-3 start in January.

Three chances for the Flyers to finally get above the 10th seed and into a playoff position.

Because of the Conference-only play this lockout-shortened season, it's almost impossible to make up ground on some clubs unless you are winning all the points.

It's not like having the Devils lose to St. Louis and you beat the Isles to make up for lost ground. The Flyers need 5 of the next 6 points. They need to be in a position of equal footing in a playoff spot by the time we hit March.

They've been a point behind a playoff seed for a couple weeks now.

The good news is that goalie Ilya Bryzgalov is not fading. I liked how he bounced back from the shootout loss last week, how he bounced back again when his team hung him out to dry on Monday night in Toronto, as well.

Bryz has given the Flyers a chance every game this season. Really, other than last March, when was the last time you say could something like that about a Flyer goaltender? It's been a long time.

Tye McGinn continues to impress me, especially with his strong board play and unflappable personality to mix it up with anyone. I like the rookie passion he brings. When you talk to McGinn after a game, it's almost as if every game is his FIRST in the NHL.

Sean Couturier was as bashful as they came last year in his rookie season. McGinn loves to talk about what he's doing and how every game is a new adventure. This is nothing shy about him.

I still have concerns about Claude Giroux and Max Talbot. And I don't believe GM Paul Holmgren for a second when he says he's not alarmed about the lack of offense or ready to pull the trigger on a deal.

He's been trying for weeks to make a trade but every discussion begins and ends with, "If Couturier is not on the table, we have nothing to talk about."
