Throughout the past week, I have been receiving questions, concerns, and comments via Twitter and Hockeybuzz PM’s and I thought it would be a good idea to introduce a portion of the blog dedicated to a mailbag for fans! If you would like to submit a question, concern, or comment feel free to either DM me via Twitter or PM me through Hockeybuzz! I will do my best to answer all questions and allow for more fan interaction throughout these blogs!

To kick things off, here are two questions/comments received in the past week:

Justin from Calgary Alb.

Hey Colin ,
Been reading your blogs for a little while now and wanted to ask what you thought about the teams future? Im worried the team is getting worse, not better...

Hi Justin, thanks for reading! It’s no news that throughout the blogs I’ve written so far I have tried to express that even though the team has not had a lot of success in the past three years, they have been making the right choices of late. Since Feaster has taken over, he has been steadily working at bringing more youth to the team with respect to roster changes as well as draft choices. It seems the consensus from the team’s standpoint is one of competitiveness while securing their future. This is not something that some fans hope to hear, because for some it means the team may flirt with playoffs each year without having the strength or depth needed for success.

Although I could agree with some of this, the bottom line is Feaster and Co. do not want to ice a group that will lose the interest of their fans in order to increase their chances at drafting higher.

With that being said, the chances of guys like Iginla being moved if the team is not struggling severely decreases. Plan on some fast paced, exciting hockey from Hartley...and an organization who will do their best to ice a team each year that will stay competitive. May be a tough road to take while trying to retool, but it is the direction this team will be taking.

Hopefully that answers your question!

Kyle from Red Deer Alb.

Liked what you had to say about the Iginla presser the other day and wanted to add that I bet itll be a waste of everyones time cause theyll likely just say Iginla is here to stay and leave him alone. Was kinda hoping he would be moved for assets...awell.

Hi Kyle,

As discussed, it’s not yet clear what the press conference will hold, although we know one thing; The Flames and Iginla will be/have been talking about his future with the team. There is no doubt that Iginla will want to stay with the team, although some argue (like myself) that much of what is said to reporters is simpy to satisfy his image and PR...and that is not to say that Jarome is not a classy guy, merely that in this profession it is important to say the right things. Jarome is nearing the end of his career and has yet win a Stanley Cup, the one thing missing throughout his illustrious career.

He may try and find a happy medium with the Flames regarding the possibility of movement if the team is not within reach of playoffs, or he may put his personal desires aside and agree to an extension of 4-5 years and retire a Flame. We should have a clearer idea soon, although frankly, the conference could do nothing more than confuse fans further.

In any case, either option could work for the team as a guy like Iginla is important for any team to have...especially one who maintains they will stay competitive while adding youth. I hope that addressed your thoughts/concerns!

Thanks for reading!
