As many of you may have noticed, the bloggers around the site thought it would be a fun idea if we all participated in a “Greatest Team of All Time” series. These blogs will be a fun way to infuse some hockey into our hockey deprived lives! The roster for the Calgary Flames will be up to you fans, so make sure to vote!

For the next few days, we will go over each position starting from the net out and vote for our favorite all time players per position. If you would like to see someone added to the list, please let me know as the team roster will ultimately be up to you!

The Calgary Flames have a long history in the NHL and were originally called founded as the Atlanta Flames in 1972 prior to moving to Calgary in 1980. Therefore, the “All Time Greatest Roster” will incorporate any player part of the Flames from the 1972 roster, to the current.

We will be choosing a 22 man roster (12 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goalies and 2 reserve). The reserve player(s) can either be a selected goon, a honorable mention, or a player(s) who received many votes but didn’t make their respective roster spot.

Once the rosters are chosen, we will organize an EA-Sports type of simulation season where results can either be instant, or games can be “watched” between two computerized teams. We anticipate all rosters to be selected by 5PM Eastern time on October 10th and the “Season Opener” will be announced the following day.

Today, as mentioned, we will start selecting the two goalies. Below you will find a list of the top 8 goalies to ever play for the Flames. Please make two selections from the list, then hit “vote”. The blog will remain open for approximately 24 hours between votes for each position.

Enjoy!

Miikka Kiprusoff – 34
Kiprusoff has been Calgary’s starting goalie for the last eight years and has posted some respectable numbers. Many wonder how much longer Miikka will remain a Flame as he is in his last year of contract with Calgary, and the Flames have a few younger goalies looking to make their mark. Kiprusoff has arguably been Calgary’s most consistent player over the last decade and has very big shoes to be filled.

Dan Bouchard – 35
Claimed by the Atlanta Flames in the 1972 expansion draft, Bouchard played eight and a half seasons for the Flames before being traded to the Quebec Nordiques for Jamie Hislop, where he led the Nordiques to their first playoffs appearance.

Roman Turek – 1
Drafted 113th overall in 1990 by the Minnesota North Stars, Turek played 152 games over three years for the Calgary Flames from 2001-2004. Turek who was considered the Flames starting goaltender, had his job taken away from him in 2003-04 when Darryl Sutter traded a conditional draft pick for current netminder, Miikka Kiprusoff. Together the goalies led the Flames to the Stanley Cup finals in 2004.
