Sabres GM Darcy Regier has been in Halifax the past couple of days. He's peeping Sabres 12th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Mikhail Grigorenko. Regier is not the only NHL GMtaking in the action live at the Halifax Metro Centre. Tampa Lightning GM, Steve Yzerman, also made the trip to Halifax to watch his future goaltender, Andrei Vasilevski, compete live and in person at the Canada-Russia Challenge.

Cynics would sneer, "Why isn't Regier watching the games on TV from his couch"?.

Optimists would say that Regier is not only watching Grigorenko, however, he is also speaking face to face with other GMs. Lining up trade partners? Perhaps revisiting conversations that were had over the phone earlier in the Summer.

Grigorenko has been downright Datsyukian in this tourney. He only has an assist to speak of on the offensive side of the puck. He's had several high percentage chances that he's failed to bury. Having said that, he's playing tremendous stick on stick D. He's skating well and using his big body to shield pucks and to create seams in the Canada zone.

Updated 2:45pm EDT:

Donnald Fehr and the NHLPA want to hammer out a new deal. No ifs ands or buts. They want it done "immediately", said Fehr in Toronto.

No wonder Gary Bettman didnt blast the NHLPA and Don Fehr after this morning's presentation. Credit to the players for stepping to the table with real value, rather than machismo and emotion.

According to Fehr:

* Revenue sharing could reach $250 million per year.

* Fehr and the players want more targeted revenue sharing.

* Fehr says the cap is still in play in the "alternative view proposal".

* Fehr says current player contract system would remain in place.

From the Canadian Press:

The NHL Players' Association and executive director Donald Fehr made their first proposal to the National Hockey League on Tuesday, with Fehr saying he believed it should, "lead to a new CBA" and "produce a stable industry."

While Fehr did not get into specific line-by-line details of the proposal, he did indicate that the players were willing to take reduced hockey-related revenue for the next three seasons and that it did not suggest the elimination of the league's hard cap.

Fehr added that the union also asked that no changes be made in regards to player contracting rules.

Chris Johnston tweeted:

I'm told a luxury tax is part of the NHLPA's new proposal. Cap won't move much under the deal, but some teams can go above and others below"

Updated 1pm EDT:

According to CTV News:

The players have made their contract pitch.

There's a tenor among some media observers in Toronto that the NHLPA's presentation was more thought-provoking and loaded with more value than the owners had expected it to be comprised of heading into today's session.

Bettman spoke for only two minutes after the meeting with the players had ended for the day.

Bettaman: "Its clear to me that they didn't put it together in an hour or two".

Gary Bettman told the assembled media that he hopes that teh NHL will be ready to respond to the NHLPA's "alternative view" model when they meet in Toronto on Wednesday morning.

Bettman would not qualify or divulge the terms of the discussions. He and the owners committee will spend the rest fo the day reviewing the players' plan.

The players and Don Fehr will speak this afternoon...
