Dineen Expecting Better Start From Panthers

As the dust settled from a game that saw the Devils fire an astounding 26 shots at Jose Theodore in the first period in Game 1 Friday night, the Panthers should be much more prepared for what is to come tonight.

Jose Theodore was outstanding in the losing effort, and with a better defensive effort in front of him he should have a good chance at evening the series at one game a piece.

There are many reasons for the possible slow start Friday, but head coach Kevin Dineen looks at it realistically.

"The first period certainly sticks with you," said Dineen. "You have to credit to your opponent. They come out hard. There are lots of excuses we could use about the layoffs and the jitters, but at the end of the day that's what it is. Excuses. We got outplayed early. We own up to it and we'll look forward to getting off to a better start."

Theodore is hoping for a lighter work load, especially in the first period, but he also isn't manufacturing reasons for the poor start. "Obviously they came a bit more prepared," said Theodore. "At this time of year I don't think it's rust. I think it's really up to us to prepare for the start of the game. I know they are a team that likes to come out really hard in the first. With 20 minutes left it was a one goal game so we were able to come back."

Dineen had to be concerned about Theodore's stamina after the first period barrage. It was just three games ago against Washington that Dineen had to put Scott Clemmensen in the game to give Theodore a breather instead of having to use a timeout.

"I knew after the first or second save I felt pretty good," said Theodore. "One time my cardio was pumping and it was hard to catch up. They kept coming and coming and it's tough physically. But you prepare all year for those kind of games and hopefully it's the last time we have to face 26 shots as a team."

It would be hard for the Devils to replicate such first period dominance, but the Panthers need to be wary of underestimating the jump the Devils bring to the table. Part of the Devils MO is always coming out strong, and the Panthers are known for coming out flat at inexplicable times.

Going down 2-0 to the Devils as the series moves to New Jersey for Tuesday and Thursday games would be a huge mountain to climb for a Florida team that will rely on scoring my committee.

A different Panther team can be expected tonight in what has to be considered a must-win game. If they carry the positive momentum from the final 40 minutes of Game 1 into tonight's game, this series will have a whole new complexion.
