The Colorado Avalanche have taken another step in becoming harder to play against.

It started with acquiring Steve Downie and has continued with the acquisition of Jamie McGinn from the San Jose Sharks.

McGinn and two top six potential forwards Michael Sgarbossa and Mike Connelly come to the Avs with forwards T.J. Galiardi and Daniel Winnik going to the Sharks.

McGinn will bring toughness, tenacity and grit to the Avalanche lineup. He is not afraid to get his nose dirty and go into the gritty areas as a player. McGinn is like Downie in that he will go into the corners and do whatever he has t to do to sacrifice for the team.

Galiardi will be the key loss as he is young and still has a lot of potential. He skated on the first line during the playoff series against the Sharks and agitated them to no end. However, due to inconsistency, injury and the occasional disagreement with coach Joe Sacco, Galiardi was dropped to the fourth line or healthy scratch of late.

Winnik will provide solid penalty killing and great defensive play, a fact that has been a little understated by everyone. Winnik won't hit often or hard but he will be reliable in the defensive end. All in all, a good fourth line forward.

The Avs also get top six potential prospects, something they lack in their prospect pool. They have Joey Hishon who is out with a concussion but not much behind that. They needed depth there and they got it.
