Suter Will Delay Re-Signing

You don't always get "news" out of an All-Star Game, but we got some today from Nashville's Ryan Suter.

Myself, Pierre Lebrun and Nick Cotsonika interviewed Ryan Suter about his intentions on re-signing before the trade deadline and for the first time, he spelled them out.

He's going to WAIT until the summer before signing with any team. As a result, I think it might be off the market to every club, FLyers included, unless someone had an outrageous offer at the deadline.

Shea Weber later told us he was "surprised" that Suter chose the All-Star format to do this but, then added, "I’m surprised it took him this long to get it off his chest."

When I pressed Suter on not re-signing and its connection to what Nashville does or doesn't do at the trade deadline to get itself that one "piece," as he calls it, to push the team over the top, Suter told me it very much impacted on his decision.

GM David Poile has a commitment from ownership to re-sign both and spend to max NEXT season. How that plays out THIS February and this July, is another story.

At this point, Poile has no choice but to keep both players through the deadline, then worry about things this summer. He can always deal Suter at the NHL Draft rather than lose him to UFA.

And then it becomes a matter of teams forking out money and draft picks.

Suter's comments to our questioning about Nashville's "philosophy" etc, are rather enlightening. Here's my story on CSNPhilly.com:
