Hawks Meet Wild, Er Jackets. And Rumors.

I won't (because I can't) go into a lengthy preview on tonight's game, beyond saying this: I would not expect huge changes in Columbus, beyond a more plodding, trap-like approach that new head coach Todd Richards, formerly head coach of the Wild, could be going to.

Interestingly, I'm not sure Richards will have the same energizing effect that Ken Hitchcock and Darryl Sutter have had in St. Louis and Los Angeles respectively, mainly because Richards was already on staff with the Blue Jackets.

That said, I have heard that Scott Arniel was at odds with some of the players and the promotion of Richards could be exactly what was necessary to smooth out the rough spots. Or not.

As far as the Hawks' lines tonight, I would expect something like:

Stalberg-Toews-Kane
Frolik-Bolland-Hossa
Bickell-Shaw-Smith
Brunette-Mayers-Hayes

Patrick Sharp's injury, added to Marcus Kruger's, really compounds a problem the Hawks have at center ice, even though Sharp has rarely lined up there this year.

Kruger, according to Coach Joel Quenneville is doing well in his recovery from concussion symptoms and could be back within the next week or so.

RUMORS:

Heard from two sources today. Again, remember that these are rumors

First, the Hawks have been holding some meetings of late that usually lead to deals almost immediately, last year's Frolik for Skille deal being one of them.

Second, the trade market remains tight, and I have heard some rumblings that some in the organization have questioned Stan Bowman's laying his cards out in the media recently—that in a seller's market, the last thing you want to do is make yourself look desperate or tell the world what it is you're really after.

I will say this, there is a certain, undeniable logic there. Bowman needs to be like a duck: calm on the surface, yet paddling like mad under the surface. Telling fans what you'e shopping for puts you no closer to actually acquiring those assets—and actually could get in your way.

Those ready to proffer up Dave Bolland, take note: I have heard another team asked for Bolland recently in return for a gritty and capable young forward and the Hawks said: "no dice."

The market remains tight. Asking prices are high. And I also doubt we will be seeing Bowman doing many more media sitdowns on the subject until some deals are done.

All I have for now. Stay posted,

JJ
