Kimmo Gets Lean and Mean

Unless a player has an on-going weight issue where he fluctuates, like Arron Asham did when he was with the Flyers, there is usually no need to drop weight.

I noticed recently that Kimmo Timonen looked thinner in his face and thinner all-around. Turns out, he dropped weight and quite possibly, dropped some muscle to increase his cardio.

A lot of older players - he turns 37 this year _ will tell you that they feel the secret to longevity in their career is stamina and endurance and not necessarily muscle.

He was at 194 last year and won't say what he dropped down to but I think it's under 190.

I remember one year Jeremy Roenick putting on 20 pounds of muscle off-season and coming back looking like the hulk and being told by coach Ken Hitchcock he was too big, too broad and too slow.

J.R. agreed and lost the weight.

Timonen told me this was all his idea. Even though he doesn't have a goal so far, I think he's been very consistent in his play this season.
