Kirk Muller era begins...

As tough as things have been as a Canes fan the last few weeks, you couldn't help but hope for a spark from the coaching change and a couple game winning streak to reinject hope in the 2011-12 season. But making any kind of judgement about the trajectory of the team in general or even just the current season based on 1 game is unfair to everyone. And the team did put forward a solid effort minus a couple costly mistakes, continued struggles on the power play and similar difficulty finding the net at even strength.

Unfortunately, the summary is pretty similar to the past week or so since the team righted the ship after hitting rock bottom in a couple ugly losses - decent effort and intensity, seem to be squeezing the saw dust out of the sticks trying to get it done and just not catching a break or 2 to turn the tide in a fairly even game.

I will finish with a tale of 2 coaches:

1) On Kirk Muller. Making any grand assessment of anything based on this 1 game (win or lose) makes no sense. But I liked the generally positive mojo from the press conference and his demeanor on the bench. My fear is it is going to take awhile to turn the ship, and it is very likely that the current season will be lost by that point. But you can't pin that on him.

2) On Paul Maurice. For anyone who made the game (I couldn't tonight), they had a snippet in the middle of the game showing the message that he left on the board in his former office for Kirk Muller. Maybe someone else has the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of "You have a great bunch of guys in the room. I wish you the best of luck. Paul Maurice." I am on record as saying it was time for a change. I can't say I would have it any other way at this point. But I have a lot of respect for Paul Maurice in being a class act.

Wish I had the time to make it to practice tomorrow.
