When Kelly Hrudey made his comments on Hockey Night In Canada it was a shock. Not that the comments weren't without just cause, but because Kelly just isn't the type of person who normally makes such scathing commentaries about anyone. For Rene Bourque to drive Kelly to make those comments shows how frustrated he is with the talented player and also reflects what many Flames fans were feeling about Rene, but don't have the forum Kelly does to express them. In case you missed it, here it is:

Now, after a dressing-down like that of a team-mate, you'd think that the entire club would have their knickers in a knot and be ready to defend their team-mate and show the world that of all things that might be going wrong with this team, desire and effort aren't part of the problem. Unfortunately, it looks like the Flames took their cue for protecting their own from the Buffalo Sabres...

Now, it's not like the Flames didn't show up last night at all. 39 shots attests to the fact that some effort was there, but it's the tough things that the Flames aren't doing that are causing so many to rightfully question this team. Sure, 39 shots sound great, but when an NHL goalie gets a clean look at almost every one, then 39 isn't such a big number. The simple fact is, it's pretty tough to beat any goalie in the league when he gets a clear look at the shot and gets to position himself and unfortunately, the Flames just sren't doing enough to make the shots tough on opposing netminders which is why so many end up being stars in their games against Calgary.

Even on the powerplay, when the Flames have an extra man on the ice they don't seem to be able to hinder the goalie's ability to make the saves. An 0-6 night last night was just icing on the cake for many fans who have been frustrated with the team's performance and the fact that it came against an admittedly rebuilding Senators team who have been hit and miss this season but thanks to the Flames on on an upswing again.

Many have had enough. The outburst by Kelly Hrudey was simply a public figure saying what many Flames fans were frustratingly saying privately between themselves whenever the subject of their team came up. The season is getting away from them just like it did last November and it's getting to the point where once again it would take a miracle for the Flames to be able to earn a post-season spot.

There's still time to turn things around, but if last night is any indication this team simply might not have what it takes to be willing to do what it needs to do in order to be able to win on a nightly basis. Right now Rene Bourque is the poster child but he's certainly not alone.

Have a great day!
