It is time for the hockey world to slowly start moving past the offseason from hell, although the memories of all those lost this summer will remain in everyone's minds. Around the NHL, teams (including the Flyers) start their rookie camps this week. Around Europe, regular seasons get underway. The KHL resumes today.

Even before the official start of Flyers' rookie camp today, Ian Laperriere has been working with the younger prospects, putting them through the paces at a tempo they are going to have to get used to if they are to make it in the NHL. Some of the older prospects (such as Tom Sestito and Matt Read) have been working out with the NHL veterans who have already reported for camp.

Today's rookie camp session starts at 10 a.m. Tomorrow, the players are scheduled to be on the ice at 9 a.m. and, on Wednesday, ice time starts at 11 a.m. At the conclusion of the three-day camp, the Flyers rookies will play the Capitals rookies at the Wells Fargo Center at 5 p.m. on Thursday. On Saturday, Flyers veterans will be on the Voorhees ice.

I will not be attending the rookie camp sessions this year but will be in Voorhees for the full camp next week. While I'm sure that Sean Couturier and Brayden Schenn will dominate the coverage over the next week, there are players at Flyers rookie camp at every position except goaltender who will be worth tracking not only this week but all season.

Meanwhile, in Finland, Flyers goaltending prospect Niko Hovinen enters the regular season with what should be sky-high confidence. After being signed to an entry-level contract by the Flyers in June, he is coming off a tremendous preseason that saw him go 10-0 with 1.40 GAA in his first 10 starts in various exhibitions and tournaments. The Finnish regular season starts on Wednesday.
