On one of our longest travel days we started with another quick trip out to Cape Spear one last time before hitting the road at 5:30 in the morning. The day’s travel consisted of a twelve hour drive across Newfoundland before a six hour ferry ride and a further five hour drive into Halifax for game two. With an almost 24 hour travel day ahead things were just getting started and we had no idea what was in store for us.

Taking the Equinox’s features to the max with the Xbox hooked up in the back and XM satellite setting the pace to the trip the first scare came when we almost ran out of gas in the middle of Newfoundland with no gas stations for miles. That said, running on fumes we made it to a station only to head back off on our way to Port Aux-Basques where a ferry waited for us to take us to Nova Scotia. Quite literally.

While driving along we found out that with the boat leaving at six o’clock we had to check in two hours before the boat left. We found this out at 4:09 PM. That’s when the day got more and more epic. After calling all sorts of folks with Marine Atlantic we were given the number of the Captain of the ship and Richard called directly. It was at this time that the hospitality of the Maritimes shone through again. After speaking with Captain Scott Chant he told us not to worry and that he would delay the ferry’s sailing so that we could get on board and make it across the Nova Scotia in time.

That’s when things got even better. While we set up shop at the front of the ferry, laptops, cameras, cell phones and all we heard over the PA “Would the guys playing hockey for the food banks please report to the reception desk on Deck 7″. After walking to the desk we were greeted by none other than Captain Scott Chant himself who said words we will never say no to, “I heard you guys wanted to play hockey, still want to play?”

At that point things just seemed surreal. The next sentence seems surreal. We played a game of hockey on the helipad of the MV Highlanders with the Captain of the boat in the Middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Yes. You read that right.

From gale force winds at the edge of North America, to playing hockey in the middle of the Atlantic and watching the sun set behind Cape Breton while whales and dolphins swam around our boat, the day has been incredible and only looks to get better as we head towards Halifax for game two!
