**congratulations to Team Canada for winning Gold in Women's Hockey. And congrats to Team USA for taking home the Silver. Chin up girls!

The NY Islanders made their first move today by giving Andrew MacDonald a four year extension. This is not exactly surprising as he has become the Islanders go-to defenseman when injury has thinned their corps. MacDonald, the 2006 NYI draftee has played on both the Islanders’ affiliates, the Utah Grizzles and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 23 year-old “AMac” was just coming off his entry level, $500,000 a year contract. No information as to whether it’s a one or two way deal has come my way. I’m always the last to know everything.

Speaking of the Islanders defense corps, it looks as if Jack Hillen will be returning ahead of schedule and should be on the ice when the Islanders return from their Olympic break. Well, 24 year-olds heal pretty fast and as was reported, the fact that he didn’t’ need to have his jaw wired shut was a bonus to his recovery. I look forward to seeing him on Tuesday.

Also reported today by Newsday beat writer Katie Strang; Tim Jackman will return to the ice for the remainder of the season with a full cage. The details of that orbital bone fracture made me queasy. But glad to hear that there is no permanent vision loss.

The question will be where Matt Martin will be come the end of the Olympic break. While he was impressive in the last few games prior to the break, he may have to jockey for a roster spot.

Tick tock goes the clock as we count down to the trade deadline. The general consensus is there will be few really BIG moves around the league. And in Islanders Country, all reports seem to be the same as to who may be sent packing. But I live in a world of surprises here on Long Island. So while certain moves may seem logical, I will brace myself for the unorthodox -- and hope for the best.
