What is "Bonding"?

Following up their 6 game, 10 day road trip in October is a 5 game, 8 day road trip that begins tonight in Chicago.

What is often heard from coaches and players are phrases like “It will be a good bonding experience”.

But what does this mean?

How do players “bond”?

Over the course of the past few weeks I asked Kings players what “bonding” meant to them – I also asked what the most fun they’ve ever had… keeping it to a PG-13 level.

RYAN SMYTH - You’ve got to become a family to get to another level and obviously Willy (Justin Williams), as experienced as he is with winning the cup… those sort of bonds make a difference in the one ice performance. You want to go to the wall for your teammate. Being together for team dinners. Other than that, we’re normal guys. We don’t get carried away, we’re professionals.

WAYNE SIMMONDS – This road trip we had 2 or 3 team dinners, getting to know the new guys. PG-13? I don’t know, that’s kind of tough (laughs).

BRAD RICHARDSON – It also like the living situation, guys are going from living with their wives or their girlfriends or another guy on the team living with a teammate, so you’re around each other constantly.

RAITIS IVANANS – Come on, tell the truth…

BRAD RICHARDSON - Everyone’s hanging out and going to the movies… The one night we went to Dave and Busters, that was fun. Roller skating rink. Raitis went by himself to a musical (in New York).

RAITIS IVANANS – I went to see “Billy Elliott”. I love that movie so I went to see that musical.

JACK JOHNSON - Just get to know the guys. Go to a movie or dinner and getting to know each other. The most fun I’ve had is going to Nashville with all the live music and the restaurants. I’m a big country music fan.

DREW DOUGHTY – The older guys don’t have their families or their kids so we do things as a team. Going out for dinners or hanging out at the hotel. We watched a couple of football games.

JUSTIN WILLIAMS – When you’re new to a team, you know the player but you don’t know the guy so when you go on the road… dinners every night, busses every night, you have a beer after the game. You always work harder for the people that you love and that’s how you want this team to be.

MATT GREENE - You’ve got nothing else to do. Outside of the rink if you’re out on the road half the time, when you get home you want to spend time with your kids. But it’s a chance for an older guy, a guy like Ryan Smyth who has 3 kids running around his house, maybe on the road he finally has a chance to sit down and have a nice dinner with Wayne Simmonds or a single guy like Drew Doughty.

Same thing with (Rob) Scuderi. Opportunities that probably wouldn’t happen at home. On those off days, you’re at the rink for maybe 3 hours then you have the rest of the day to yourself, there’s nothing to do but get to know one another.
(when asked what was the most fun he’s ever had on the road?)
I’m not telling you. Not a chance.

ROB SCUDERI – For me I have my family, my responsibilities. When you’re on the road you don’t have those. You get to know what a guy likes, doesn’t like. You don’t think much about it but it helps build team chemistry and that could go a long way during a long season.

I grabbed a couple of guys I really hadn’t had a chance to talk to and we had lunch in New York City and get a feel for who they are as a person, how they feel about the team. It helps you do your job because you care about the team you’re with.

Congrats Luc Robitaille on your induction into the hall of fame. I wrote a little tid-bit HERE.

So Pierre LeBrun mentions today that the Kings could be interested in Forsberg.

29 other teams would be interested in Forsberg. What makes the Kings instant Stanley Cup contenders?
