Despite the fact that Ron Hextall and Dean Lombardi have said they are not interested, his character is in question, he doesn't seem to get along with coaches unless he's allowed free reign...
Dany Heatley to the Kings makes a lot of sense.
1) It's Los Angeles - the press doesn't care - He won't be under the Canadian press microscope.
2) If he demands a trade after not being able to play for coach Murray or the next, his only alternative left will be collecting a paycheck in the KHL. I doubt the Ruskies can match 7.5 million, even if it is tax free.
3) The West is tailor made for his style of play (i.e. - not a lot of checking)
Dean Lombardi and the Kings can talk all they want about "building from within", but replacing the combination of Armstrong/Boyle/Calder with Smyth is certainly an upgrade and Scuderi over Gauthier was certainly a decision 29 other GM's would have made.
But are the Kings really that much better than their 14th place finish last season?
With Frolov entering the final year of his contract, are his numbers and size going to be replaced by
Oscar Moller and Ted Purcell?
A quick look in Manchester and the only decent offensive prospect is
Trevor Lewis?
Come on.
Even championship teams have brooding, selfish, malcontents. I uderstand Lombardi and Hextall's need to build this franchise with the "core", but are they expecting the fans to wait for Loktionov and Brayden Schenn to pull this franchise out of the pit in two or three years, long after Frolov has departed for a 5-6 million dollar contract?
The guy can SCORE. Pure and simple.
Dean Lombardi has been building this franchise with defense.
Jack Johnson and
Drew Doughty are already here. Hickey and Voinov are right around the corner. Quick and Bernier and Zatkoff are the netminders fans have been waiting for for 40+ years.
Let the guy who can score, score and let the prominent defenseman play defense.
The Kings certainly have enough to match what the Oilers were willing to depart with and I imagine it will take
Dany Heatley about half a second to approve a deal to L.A.
There aren't going to be many people who will say Lombardi is an idiot should he acquire Dany. As a matter of fact, the polls will probably boost the Kings from a POSSIBLE 8th place finish, to somewhere in the 4-6.
Isn't that worth it?
For years to come?
It's time for Dean Lombardi and his staff to put a stamp on their tenure here. We've waited a long time. Don't make us wait any longer. Malcontent or not, he hasn't proven to be a locker room cancer. The current Kings players will love him, and he'll love them.
Do it Deano.
