Motown Never Looked So Bleak

MOTOWN, HIT CITY, USA _ Very, very depressing going through the streets of downtown Detroit and seeing so many shops, restuarants, even famous pubs, closed.

The Boy Genius and I walked back from The Joe today and were stunned at how few people were on the street in 60-degree temps. Simply, deserted. The few people who are around, are depressed and miserable. They don't even want to talk about how bad it is.

I used to try to wonder what my grandparents went through during the Depression and I am absolutely convinced that what we are witnessing right now is a depression, even if the economists are afraid to say it.

When cities are devoid of people, things are bad. Everywhere I have been this season in hotels, they are empty.

I walked through GM headquarters' lobby today ... just me, BG and a security guard.

And the bar at the Marriott is playing Marvin and Tammi ...

Some of you have asked about Danny Briere. There is no question, he is being auditioned right now on a third and fourth line with the intent n building his minutes, building his confidence and making certain he can handle the task at hand without leaving the lineup because of groin or abdominal issues.

I think John Stevens is making the right move here. But after questioning Briere today about how long he will tolerate the bottom half of the lineup, there is no doubt in my mind he expects to be promoted to the first or second line before the playoffs.

As much as Stevens doesn't want to rip apart his top, 2 units, he has to understand that Briere needs skill players around him to succeed. And since we already know the Flyers are fine w/out him in the lineup, what does Stevens lose by gambling at some point and putting Briere w/either Richards or Carter?

My story on CSNPhilly.com has Stevens and Briere's take on it:
