More Hawk Trade Rumors...It's Dangerous To Mess With The Core

Everyone loves Brent Seabrook, which includes many NHL teams and if the rumors are true so does Bryan Murray. It seems more often than not Seabrooks name is mentioned in trade rumors. I feel he is a part of the Hawks young core and will not be moved unless it is an earth shaker trade slanted toward the Hawks.

Seabrook, Keith, Toews, Kane, Campbell and Sharp are the Hawks core components. There may be a couple of others like Huet that can be added to the list shortly but for now those are the six major components to this team. All of those players are under contract to be here for awhile and most likely it will remain that way.

Bryan Murray is not the GM who is operating from a position of strength in this case. He wasn’t the one in a superior position when he supposedly offered Gerber and Emery for Khabibulin and Lalime near the trade deadline. I see the same scenario now as the Hawks can benefit from a trade which would send Khabibulin to Ottawa but they don’t need to be desperate and bend over to get that done.

Vermette and Neil to Chicago for Khabibulin would net out to about a 2.5 million dollar Cap savings for the Hawks. Those numbers would work if Vermette would sign a 3 million dollar deal for instance. I suppose Barker and some prospects could be part of a bigger trade as Vermette could command a larger salary. Regardless I don’t see a need to include Seabrook.

Right now unless the dollars work out and a true top line player comes to Chicago, Seabrook going anywhere would be a risky move for the Hawks. I got a lot of feedback from those who thought Cam Barker showed improvement the second half of last year, and I can see their point.

Did anyone on the Blue Line here improve more than Keith and Seabrook last season?

The timing is right for the Hawks to make a trade early this week. We may find out before this weekends Hawk Convention if any transactions will include Khabibulin or Seabrook.
