Ruzicka to Russia

Restricted free agent Stefan Ruzicka has signed a contract with Spartak Moscow of the Continental Hockey League. The Flyers, who made a qualifying offer to Ruzicka last week, retain his NHL rights.

Ruzicka has developed slowly as a pro and his window of opportunity to earn a regular NHL spot on the Flyers closed. At 23, he's a decent, but far from spectacular, offensive player in the AHL and a marginal NHLer. He needs a change of scenery, although more than anything else he needs to realize that he's not talented enough to succeed at hockey's top level on his talent alone. He wasn't consistent enough offensively to play on a scoring line and, while improved defensively, not a natural checking liner, either.

Ruzicka's fellow Slovak and former Flyer Branko Radivojevic also signed with Spartak after playing the last two seasons with the Minnesota Wild.
