Quick Hits: May 15, 2024
1) QMJHL Final: Flyers wing prospect Alexis Gendron and the Drummondville Voltigeurs are going to the 2024 Memorial Cup in Saginaw, Michigan. On Tuesday evening, Drummondville held off a late rally by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to earn a 4-3 home win and complete a sweep of the 2023-24 Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League's Gilles-Courteau Cup Final.
Gendron, who had a hat trick in Game 1 of the series, collected a pair of assists in the championship clincher. Overall, for the QMJHL playoffs, Gendron posted 19 points (11g, 8a) in 15 games. Drummondville swept three of their four playoff series, going 16-1 overall.
2) OHL Final: The London Knights have an opportunity on Wednesday to sweep the Oshawa Generals and win the Ontario Hockey League championship. On Monday in Oshawa, London (15-2 thus far in the OHL playoffs) overcame a 6-2 deficit in the third period to earn 7-6 victory in double overtime.
In postseason play to date, Flyers defense prospect Oliver Bonk has 16 points (7g, 9a) and a plus-15 rating in 17 games. Flyers wing prospect Denver Barkey has 24 points (5g, 19a) and a plus-10 rating.
The Saginaw Spirit, who lost to London in the Western Conference Final, are the Memorial Cup host team. Saginaw received an automatic spot in the Canadian Hockey League's championship tournament.
3) WHL Final: The Portland Winterhawks fell into a three games to zero deficit in the Western Hockey League Final after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors in Game 3 on Tuesday. Game 4 is in Portland on Wednesday.
Flyers defense prospect Carter Sotheran has been unable to play in this series. He suffered an undisclosed injury in the clinching game of the Western Conference Final on May 6.
4) IIHF World Championships: Team USA (1-1-1) and Team Sweden (3-0-0) are both idle on Wednesday during the preliminary round of the 2024 IIHF World Championships in Czechia.
Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson made his first start of the tournament on Monday, turning back 15 of 16 shots in a 6-1 win over Germany. Flyers winger Joel Farabee has posted one assist through the Americans' first three games.
5) Today in Flyers History: Two franchise-changing events in team history took place on May 15. On May 15, 1973, the Flyers reacquired the NHL rights to Bernie Parent from the Toronto Maple Leafs after Parent spent the 1972-73 season in the World Hockey Association with the Philadelphia Blazers. On May 15 1984, Flyers captain Bob Clarke announced his retirement as an active player to become the team's general manager.
