Quick Hits: Phantoms Eliminated, IIHF Worlds, CHL Playoffs

Quick Hits: May 12, 2024

1) The Lehigh Valley Phantoms were eliminated from the Calder Cup playoffs on Saturday after a 5-3 loss to the Hershey Bears in Game 4 of the Atlantic Division Semifinals. Hershey won the series, three games to one.

On Saturday, the Phantoms took 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first period but were unable to protect or build upon either advantage. The game was tied, 2-2, heading into the second period. The Bears took a 4-2 lead in the middle frame before the Phantoms got one goal back with 3:43 remaining in the period. Hershey restored a two-goal lead in the third period and carried it the rest of the way.

The Phantoms received goals in Game 4 from Rhett Gardner (1st of the playoffs), team captain Garrett Wilson (2nd) and Tanner Laczynski (4th). Bobby Brink (4th assist of the postseason), Brendan Furry (2nd), Cooper Marody (5th), Jacob Gaucher (1st) and Adam Brooks (2nd) chipped in one helper apiece. Cal Petersen stopped 22 of 27 shots on goal. The Phantoms put 32 shots on goal against Hunter Shepard (29 saves).

The Phantoms were 0-for-2 on the power play. The Bears were 1-for-4.

The Phantoms starting lineup was as follows:

2) IIHF World Championships: Team USA defeated Germany, 6-1, on Saturday in Ostrava, Czechia. Skating with Will Smith and Trevor Zegras, Flyers winger Joel Farabee logged 14:31 of ice time. He recorded two shots on goal but did not get on the scoresheet.

Team Sweden (Samuel Ersson) will play Poland on Sunday. Team USA will go up against Slovakia on Monday.

3) OHL Finals: The London Knights rolled to a second straight home blowout win over the Oshawa Generals on Saturday, crushing Oshawa by a 9-1 score. The Knights have outscored their opponents by a 17-2 total over the first two games of the best-of-seven series.

Flyers prospect Denver Bakey racked up four points (1g, 3a) in Game 2. Oliver Bonk had three assists. Game 3 is on Monday in Oshawa.

4) WHL Finals: Flyers defense prospect missed his second straight game in the playoff Final after sustaining an undisclosed injury in the clinching game of the Western Conference Final round. On Saturday, the Moose Jaw Warriors took a two games to zero lead over Portland in their best-of-seven series for the Western Hockey League championship.

5) QMJHL Finals: The Drummondville Voltigeurs (Alexis Gendron) hold a two games to zero lead their QMJHL championship series against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. The venue shifts to Drummondville on Monday for Game 3.
