UPDATE III: From Tim Panaccio:

"Bergeron has a broken nose and a concussion and has regained consciousness. He has full feeling and motion in all of his extremeities.

Further tests planned."

Fantastic news that it seems Patrice will be ok long-term. This could have been much, much worse and the league needs to work to get hitting from behind out of the game before it's too late.

UPDATE II: Statement from Randy Jones, issued by the Flyers:

“Words really can't express the way that I feel right now. I am very apologetic for the hit and what I did. It was not intentional. It is something that I have never done before and it is not part of my character. I am extremely sorry. I hope he does OK and everything works out for him. I wish him nothing but the best in his recovery.”

**

UPDATE:
Earlier I wrote that he was conscious as he was being taken off and talking to the doctor - apparently that was not the case, as NESN now says the doctor was speaking to him but Patrice may not have been responding. They are reporting that Patrice is being examined by several doctors at the moment, with no information available yet on his condition.

Horrible, horrible incident in Boston.

In a game that opened up with two fights featuring four players who can't play a regular shift, Patrice Bergeron hit was hard from behind into the boards by Randy Jones and was taken off the ice on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

Bergeron has been taken to hospital. He was down on the ice laying motionless for quite a few minutes and moved very little before being put onto the stretcher.

Randy Jones was given 5 and a game for the hit from behind. Although clearly not a premeditated hit, Jones will likely be third Flyers suspended for a careless and dangerous incident this year.

The most important thing right now is the health of the Bruins' young star player. His parents had come in for the game, but instead of watching their son compete in the greatest game on the planet they are now at the hospital after witnessing the darkest side of our sport.

More to come once there are reports on Bergeron's condition.
