West Coast games always present me a challenge these days.
Last night, I stood no chance.
With that, I won't pretend to be qualified to provide any sort of comprehensive recap or critique of the Tampa Bay Lightning's 4-3 overtime loss to the Ducks in Anaheim last night.
But I will take the blame for the loss ...
An explanation:
Mr. Sandman struck his first death blow just before the opening faceoff. I fought, but it was one of those,
"I'll just close my eyes for a few minutes" moments and I slept through about 80% of the first period ... And the Ducks built a 2-0 lead on goals by
Teemu Selanne and
Ryan Getzlaf.
I came to, saw a few highlights, made a few observations via Twitter and prepped for the middle frame.
As I stepped away for a few minutes early in the second,
Bobby Ryan extended the Duck lead to three and my superstitious side begged me to focus.
Back in front of the tube,
Jeff Halpern thanked my recommitted efforts by getting the Bolts on the board almost immediately and then this happened:
Epic goal. I can say no more ...
... Except that
Steven Stamkos is doing absolutely everything to keep his name in the conversation for the Canadian Olympic team.
But that's secondary, at this point. Primarily, he's continuing to lead the Lightning and, as evidenced by that incredible tally last night, in spectacular fashion to boot.
Back to my struggles with consciousness ...
I had to give myself a pep talk during the second intermission and convinced myself that I could last the rest of the way and, while I caught
Martin St. Louis' equalizer with one eye open, that was about it. (Edit: Goal has since been credited to
Ryan Malone.)
Goodnight Irene (or JJ, as it were).
Waking up juuuuuuust after
Scott Niedermayer's OT winner was frustrating, to say the least, but I returned to my slumber with peace of mind. I had done all that I could do.
Still, pin the loss on me, if you must. I'm a team player.
For the Lightning, it's another point and they battled back out of a 3-0 hole. For that, a little credit is due. A .708 winning percentage over the last twelve is nothing to scoff at either.
And now, back to Eastern Standard Time for Carolina on Saturday, nice and early, 7:00 PM.
That's more like it.
