Quick Hits: May 13, 2024

1) 2024 IIHF World Championships: Team USA dropped to 1-1-1 in preliminary round play after sustaining a 5-4 overtime loss in Ostrava, Czechia, to Team Slovakia on Monday. The Americans trailed after two periods, 4-1, but staged a three-goal comeback in the third period to force OT.

Flyers winger Joel Farabee recorded his first point of the tournament assisting on a Shane Pinto goal at 4:32 of the third period to start the comeback. Brady Tkachuk cut the game to 4-3 at 13:56 before Luke Hughes tied the game at 16:38. At 3:56 of OT, Milos Kelemen won the game for the Slovaks.

Later today, Team Sweden (Samuel Ersson) will go up against Team Germany.

2) On this week's Mondays with Meltzer edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I discuss the Phantoms' elimination from the Calder Cup playoffs, the latest on Matvei Michkov, Ivan Fedotov being sanctioned by the IIHF along with CSKA Moscow, the common threads of roster building for playoff success and much more.

3) CHL Finals: The championship finals in two Canadian Hockey League circuits will continue on Monday night. In the Ontario Hockey League, the London Knights (leading two games to zero) are on the road to take on the Oshawa Generals. In the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, the Drummondville Voltigeurs (leading two games to zero) will host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in Game 3.

In the Western Hockey League, the Portland Winterhawks (trailing two games to zero) will host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday night. Flyers defense prospect Carter Sotheran did not suit up in either Game 1 or Game 2 due to an injury suffered in the clinching game of the Western Conference Final.
