Jagr Named 24th Captain Rangers win opener 5-2

The New York Rangers announced before the season-opener with the Washington Captials that right winger Jaromir Jagr has been named the 24th Captain in New York Ranger history, and the first since Mark Messier held the position from 2000-2004.

"Jaromir Jagr has all the qualities and characteristics that great leaders possess".President and General Manager Glen Sather said in a statement released to the press." His incomparable ability on the on the ice, incredible locker room presence and courage are the reasons he is so deserving of this honor" Sather continued.

Jaromir Jagr is entering his 16th season in the NHL and his third with the Rangers. He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1st round, 5th overall, in the 1990 Entry Draft. He came to the Rangers in a trade from the Washington Captials January 23, 2004 for Anson Carter. In 2005-06, he registered new Ranger records for goals and points in a season. He won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 and 1992. Bill Cook was the first Ranger captain named from 1926-27-1936-37 seasons. Mark Messier is the only Ranger captain to be named twice. October 7, 1991-May 25,1997 and from July 13 2000 till Apirl 3, 2004. Jagr had a goal and an assist and was named the second star in the Ranger opener at Madison Square Garden; a 5-2 win over the Washington Captials.

Brendan Shanahan scored twice in his New York Rangers debut, becoming the 15th player to score 600 goals. Shanahan scored on a breakaway in the second period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. The second goal he scored on a scramble, in front of net during a delay-penalty call against the Captials.The 37-year-old forward signed a 4million US, one-year contact after scoring 40 goals and 81 assists last season for the Detroit Red Wings.
