Realistically . . . . let's look at both Nylander and Marner and start with the PK.

Now you have different deployments in terms of opposition strength, but this year amongst our 10 penalty killers with more than 20 minutes of PK time, Marner was 6th in preventing Shots against, 7th in goals against, 8th in expected goals against, 9th in Scoring Chances Against and 5th in High Danger Chances against.

Nylander, similarly, was 4th in Shots Against, 6th in goals against, 9th in expected goals against, 3rd in scoring chances against and 4th in HD chances against.

Unsurprisingly Matthews was better than both of them in all categories: 1st in shot suppression, 1st in goals against, 1st in expected goals against, 1st in scoring chances against and 3rd in HD chances against (Gregor was first).

This year the PK wasn't the differentiator for Marner that it might normally be.

The lack of attention to detail in the D-Zone isn't just on man coverage - which is where Marner beats Nylander - but it's also on clean zone exits, not turning the puck over in your own zone on your own side of centre prior to the red line, and that's where Nylander beats Marner. Both of them have their issues there and neither one really excels as much as any of us fans would like.

- Monkeypunk

I appreciate the sane post.

Without going too deep into it because it’s getting late and I’m watching something rn..

I’ll say this. Marner this year spent more than twice as much time per game on the PK than Willy did. Also I recall Willy being mostly 2nd PK unit, and was used mainly as an offensive threat, trying to get breakaways.

Nylander doesn’t think the game in a defensive way. That’s why it took him 8 years to start PKing. Also his yearly +/- is always much lower than Mitch’s. This year Keefe (and I assume Tre) emphasized growing his two-way game. He didn’t look great, but everyone forgets when you’re having a career year in terms of points.

Somehow suggesting that Nylander is on par or really even close to Mitch defensively is hard to bridge. He’s just not. He’s a good skater, puck handler, and he shoots a lot. He’s selfish. Not saying that’s always bad, but he’s not the player Marner is.

Both are soft.

Marner ($10.9M)
Primary Pts: 66
Giveaways: 60
Dzone Giveaways: 20
Takeaways: 59

Willy ($6.9M)
Primary Pts: 76
Giveaways: 45
Dzone Giveaways: 12
Takeaways: 68

I’ve posted this and the previous 8 years in prior discussions in here. When you look at those categories and then factor in that Marner is barely ahead over past 8 years and has the luxury of playing with 34 it’s not outrageous to suggest that Marner/Willy aren’t literally neck and neck as players in terms of impact.

I personally give Willy the edge because he is more clutch and plays better in playoffs than Marner…add in the cost of Marner vs Willy - it’s a no brainer who would be gone if they decide to go that way.

These are all arbitrary stats and I swear to god there’s an orangutan punching a typewriter recording these.

Also, Mitch played fewer games, but still had a higher ppg than Willy.

Mitch: +21
Nylander: +1

Marner also has 111 more points in 27 fewer GP. But go on

A) Primary Pts. he does NOT have 111 more than Willy.

B) you think Primary Pts. Giveaways, TakeAways, and Dzone giveaways are arbitrary stats? That’s hockey man. The directly impact the game shift to shift. You then point to a +\- stat? Maybe the most arbitrary stat there is. It has so much to do with others where the ones I point to are directly you as the player.

C) Insinuating that I’m an orangutang is maybe the blurst thing anyone has said to me.

If there was a way we would be able to k ow whether Mitch was asked to waive (and Willy for that matter) or not - I would bet an ip block on here and a few grand. If one’s asked it will absolutely be little boy Mitchy who vanishes in the playoffs (not gaming sites or tick-tock) when the game gets tougher and more intense.

…correct me if I’m wrong - but this could be the night the Leafs get shutout

Unless you’re recording the giveaway/takeaway stats, I didn’t suggest you’re an orangutan.

If their +/- were similar then you’d have a fair point. Mitch is always miles ahead of him on that, it’s a pattern.

C’mon man, are you really that daft to think I was saying “this might be the game the Leafs finally get shutout” for any reason other than to jinx them getting shutout?? I shouldn’t have to explain this. You guys surprise me

Just going with the ageism comment tonight - no Anti-semantic comments?

Sorry that apparently you are too young (and / or soft) to remember the Bozo the clown punching bag.

This does explain a lot about you though.

Again, +\- is a stat that the other players you are on with and who is on your net have a direct impact. That’s why it’s probably the most fluffy on add stat. The stats I referenced are a direct representation of the player himself. They generate primary points, the generate takeaways, they throw out muffins at both blue lines and along the wall especially on power plays for Marner example, they give it away own zone. It’s off their stick.
Frankly BOTH Marner and Willy are notorious for changing as the ply is leaving the other teams offensive zone bs getting back. It’s been highlighted multiple times. They both do that.

You’re sorry that I’m too young? What?

I’m 37 btw. Likely middle of the pack for posters in here.

I don’t remember any bozo memorabilia, but I’ve heard the name.

As far as the anti-Semitic comment YOU MADE you can call it whatever you want. You made the comment and it was what it was and I’ll call out the fact it shows what an anti-Semitic, delusional POS you are.

2nd best candidate.

Not terrible (because at least he has a Cup), but not the best possible hire either because the circumstances he succeeded under don't appear to be the same in Toronto nor do they appear to be easily replicated either.

Should be interesting to see if Binnington becomes a target even though without an elite top-4 D in front of him he's been pretty average since his first year. Kind of Cam Wardish career path.

Without the likes of Pietrangelo, Parayko, Dunn, Bouwmeester and Binnington (at his best), I don't see Berube doing what he did in St. Louis mostly because he himself couldn't replicate what he did with most of the same players in the years following his successful run. And I don't see Treliving being able to give it to him in a short period of time either.

They're trying to get 1 guy to change 10-15 guys instead of finding the 1 coach who can maximize what they already have. The last time he coached a team like the Leafs (offensive players, no defense, no goalie) was the Flyers and that didn't go very well either. Except when they had Pronger, which the Leafs also won't be able to replicate, unfortunately.

Overall, he's a long time assistant (9 years vs 8 years as HC) and as a head coach he missed the playoffs twice, 1st round exit 3 times, 2nd round exit once and 1 Cup. The majority of his career, as both an assistant and a head coach, has been either missing the playoffs or being out in the 1st round. .471 winning %.

I'd prefer to see Vancouver and Rangers in the final.

I think we will probably get Dallas and Florida.

I have no use for any of them, but I'd prefer that Texas or Florida don't win a (frank)ing thing.

Yup. It was the right outcome. They had to win twice in OT to win.
