That game was over for the Penguins, at least in my estimation, when Letang got in that fight. It showed me everything I needed to know about what is going on. Games 1 and 2 showed poor defense and goaltending by the Penguins (and the Flyers frankly). Letang has to know he is both the Pens top defenceman as well as their powerplay quarterback. He must, absolutely MUST keep his composure no matter what and stay in that game. As much as I despise Vancouver, you see the Sedins take incredible punishment that they are often mocked for not responding to, but those guys realize #1 that is someone else's job to respond to and #2 that they are to important to the team to take emotion penalties by responding. Letang needs to do the same. He was the first to head to the lockers and I knew it was over right there.
If he was going it meant that the Penns were not in an emotionally ready spot to win that game, the Flyers had now owned their heads.
So where does the blame lie? In my opinion you need an older, cagey veteran for a captain. I don't have a problem with Sid, he is a kid, has always been a superstar and is probably a punk, but really I don't care about that. But after missing as much time as he did, and being as young as he is, I really think the Penns lacked commanding on ice leadership and it becomes evident that the kids were running the show like kids the minute he failed to calm himself and then nudged the glove away, which led to more combat and less hockey.
I do not think Mario comes into this at all, and I do not think any of us know what Bylsma's been up to to know whether he has fault or not, although considering what a professional he is he will probably try and take it-- deserved or not.
What would you change? In your past cup runs you had veterans in that locker room, like Roberts and Guerin, I think you need more of that as the team really is playing like a bunch of youngsters right now. And get more defense.
As for the seeding argument, I have an obvious bias based on where I live now, so I will merely say, the rules exist and have existed this way for some time. Occasionally this rewards soft conferences, and the conferences competitiveness ebbs and flows with the years. To point to that as some type of fault or contributor is low-grade sportsmanship and believe it or not, I expect better because I do believe that the Pens and their fans are above that. |
