Behind the scenes, I wouldn't be surprised if Hawks management is quite hesitant to go "all in" on this years team, simply because there are too many glaring holes that need to be addressed that we've discussed ad nauseum here. I don't think a trade or two will cure what ailes this team, and mortgaging our future by trading away your highly thought of prospects (internally perceived or otherwise) is something the Hawks are likely not going to do. It's no secret the Hawks are trying to build a long term contender in the mold of the Redwings through drafting and developing their players, so wild trade scenarios while fun to speculate about, are somewhat unlikely.
Yes Tallon, (who seems to get ALL the credit for building the Cup team) is a good judge of talent, but did all our scouts leave the organization with him? If so, then perhaps the alarm bells should be ringing. But, I'd like to think our supporting cast in terms of scouting is still as strong as it was under Tallon's reign, which saw us draft late round gems in Byfuglien, Brouwer, Hjalmarsson, Burish, etc., not to mention the trades for Versteeg, Sharp, and Ladd to fill out the roster. If you recall, when those trades were made, the Hawks were bad, and those players were still works in progress or simply “complimentary players” for the most part.
All the Monday morning quarterbacking by us NON hockey management folks is easy to do, yet I’ve lowered my expectations for this year’s version of the Hawks. We as fans were spoiled by the 2010 team, and it’s easy to throw Stan under the bus, but I think he needs a little more time to see how some of HIS moves pan out...Nobody could have predicted that Shaw would be where he is at this point, and he's a 5th rounder... Hayes playing well, Kruger, Leddy! Not every move is going to be a home run...for any GM, but he has made some good ones that seem to get overshadowed by not overpaying for a perceived “quick fix” to this team. I’m with many, in that the coaching needs to be better, and that means Kitchen needs to go!!! Also, Frolik should get more than 5 shifts on the top line…let the kid get some consistency. He played top line minutes in FLA with lesser talent and scored 20+ in 2 years…but him bouncing around every line all game long ruins him and makes him a convenient whipping boy thanks to his contract…My .02 cents
