How can a 23 yo D with a 35 points avg a year getting paid 950k AND be in the top 20 Ds in the NHL be overrated?

Please explain.

trust me, i'm not spending the time to look it up, but what exactly does 35 points equate to standings wise? pretty sure jake gardiner just pumped out close to that in toronto in his first year. he's not worth yakupov.

he won't be getting paid 950 k for much longer. pretty sure denis wideman just set the bar for average at best overpaid offensive blueliners around 5 mil a season.

better question.. how does anything you just mentioned as evidence actually promote the idea that he's not overrated? curious...

well really, are you guys under the impression that this 35 points thing means something spectacular? i can almost think of at least 15, probably upwards of 25 defenseman off the top of my head that put up 35 points this season, or close to it.

... and? that's worth a first overall draft pick?

I wouldn't say he is over rated. But I dont trade a guy that will be top 10 in scoring in the entire NHL in a couple years for a guy that is a 20-25 Dman in the league.

and that's exactly what i meant.. with the overrated part. the implications that he's anything more than a top 25 defenseman in the league. a talented youngster, no doubt, and only going to get better..

but we're talking about trading a player for PK subban, who probably shouldn't even be discussed in a trade unless one of the top 5 dmen in the nhl are being discussed as names going the other way.

Trades cannot simply be evaluated on 2-3 stats.

Would PK fill a need in EDM ? Yes.
Does EDM have a top 30 D (2012) No
PK ranks28th one spot ahead of now all of famer Lidstrom in the 2012 season. ( again let's not argue over basic stats here )

Pk was one of the "decent" players on a horrible Habs team in 2012... he still managed to have decent all around numbers while playing 25 mins a night.

From there.. we can only speculate if he's gonna keep on improving or not.

Look at the market for puck moving D's that can also play physical hockey... it's wacko-crazy .... so we have to be carefull when evaluating a (super star) forward that never played one NHL game against a proven D commodity that should only get better in the upcoming years.

Would it be a fair deal ? one for one ? Probably not. Would it be a smart deal ? Most probably when you look at what EMD's got when it comes to young super star forwards.

I think there are a lot of people that are under estimating Edmontons D. They were all injured and patched together last year. Whitney when he went down to injury 2 yrs ago was 3rd in the league in D scoring. He is just getting back to full health now. I guess the season will tell, but I will still say no deal to taking on Subban if it meant giving p Yak or any of the 6 young guns or a first rounder.

So you would move across the country to a less desireable competitor just to take a pay raise? I would sooner work it out with my current employer or be damned sure that the team I was going to was a contender.

Less desirable? I don't see how Montreal is a less desirable place... better weather, better arena and facilities and more opportunities for sponsorship money. Not to mention all the history that Montreal has if I was an elite player who was offered a ton of money to play in montreal over edmonton i'd definitely choose montreal!

That I can agree with.

Except for the part of the pick. At one point, EDM as got to be better... that 1st pick might not play for EDM for 2-3-4 years... EDM can't wait that long to have a top D to support those top forwards.

Like I've said... Yaks for PK 1 for 1 ? DO it up if you are the Habs without hesitating.
Yaks would fit in nicely for sure.

If it's not one for one.. .then it could the kind of deal that helps both teams.

Not sure what it would take to make it happen.

I know that PK for Gagner, Parjavi and picks won't happen. No need for another soft smurf down the middle. This team needs a top 6 power forward if it's going to inject a forward in the mix.

On another note... Hemsky for the right price would fit in nicely next to Plekanec.

I didnt nessesarily mean the city per se...Montreal is a great place.
Edmonton also has a great history, a new arena on the way and a team that is on the verge of shooting up the ranks. I dont think the Habs are going to contend in the next few years. JMO though.

Teams that can spend to the cap have proven time and again turn arounds dont take very long.

They have Pacman, Desharnais, Plekanec, Galchenyuk, Leblanc, and Gallagher up front long term and Subban, Emelin, Tinordi, Beaulieu on D, not to mention argueably one of the best young goalies on the planet.

Habs have very little left to fix before their right back in it. The biggest bug-a-boo left is ditching Scott Gomez.
