The Islanders put together a strong final frame, limiting the Rangers to just eight shots and generating some good chances themselves. Then with under three minutes to go, Kyle Palmieri went to the net to redirect Ryan Pulock’s shot to the front of the net, putting the Islanders ahead and they held on after that for the 2-1 win.
It’s a nice win for the Islanders, coming on the road against a strong team and division rival.
I’m mentioning this every game at this point, but Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri continue to be completely different players for the Islanders than they were through much of the first half of the year. Lee is riding a six-game goal streak, scoring nine times over that stretch, while Palmieri now has 10 goals in his last 16 games.
Ilya Sorokin was great as well, stopping 29 shots in the win, with some of them being pretty excellent saves.
New York has now also picked up nine points over their last five games, going 4-0-1 in that stretch. They’re looking a lot more like they were expected to this year, even if it’s too little, too late.
The Islanders’ next game comes on Saturday against the Dallas Stars.
