Breaking: Ads on Jerseys - How do you like that? (Canadiens)

This news hit Twitter minutes before lunch and has now been retweeted by several hockey journalists; the NHL owners have approved jersey patches for the 2022-23 season and their size will be 3-inch x 3.5-inch and they will feature some advertisement. In other words, they will be slightly bigger than the NBA patches. The NBA has been using those since the 2017-2018 season and the players have yet to turn into walking advertisement billboards.

To be honest, I hate this idea. As a fan first but also as a collector. The Montreal Canadiens have got one of the most classic uniform in hockey and it’s hardly been changed for ages because you just don’t mess with the Habs’ tradition… Now, in the name of money, they’ll put adverts on those storied jerseys. As a collector, I don’t want to see adverts on my game-used jersey, I collect them for the team and the players, not for Bell, Molson or whatever may end up on there.

I only hope that the NHL jerseys never end up looking like European Football jersey where the sponsor’s logo is the main design on there and the team’s emblem is reduced to a patch on the heart of the players. Hopefully, it ends up looking subtle, much like the Bell logo on the Canadiens’ helmet, but still, I can’t help thinking that this is a slippery slope… What do you think?
