After being shut out by Canadiens, Sharks defy odds to beat Jets (Sharks)

While the Sharks didn't score, they did throw 45 shots at Jake Allen and got some great chances. Also, of the goals they allowed, the first two came off a rebound and point shot respectively – not overly dangerous first chances – while the last goal was an empty netter, meaning the score didn’t really represent how close the game was. While it was honestly quite a strong effort though, San Jose missed an opportunity to pick up a win at home against a team who was struggling. Then before their game against Winnipeg Jets, the Sharks got some pretty rough news, being that seven players and head coach Bob Boughner were being placed in COVID protocol. These players were Andrew Cogliano, Jonathan Dahlen, Erik Karlsson, Jake Middleton, Matt Nieto, Radim Simek and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, so it was certainly going to be a tough contest. The Sharks entered the game with four of their six defenders making their season debut and both Santeri Hatakka and Ryan Merkley playing their first NHL game. The Jets had won four straight games heading into the matchup, which didn’t make things look any better on paper. Despite this, it was a very good game and the Sharks had no trouble generating really good chances, especially through the first 40 minutes. While the Sharks did give up a late goal which sent the game to overtime, San Jose managed to pick up the win with a power play goal in the extra frame. Credit is due to Brent Burns Mario Ferraro, each of whom played over 25:30, while every other defender on the team played at least nine minutes less than that. James Reimer was also very good and it was certainly an impressive victory, given the circumstances. So the Sharks have split their first two games of the homestand, with three more home games to go in the stretch. It remains a key time for the team to stay competitive and hopefully they’ll be able to pick up where they left off when they face the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. ***NOTE: We've launched a HockeyBuzz Sharks Twitter account!
