Hockey Views: Edvinsson Gets Up Off Deck, Nets OT Winner (nhl news)

File this one under profiles in courage.

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson crumpled to the ice after blocking a shot from Toronto captain Auston Matthews with the inside of his right knee during Sunday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Undaunted, crawling on all fours, Edvinsson moved himself head-first into the path of the rebound and, while prone on the ice, managed to deflect away a second Matthews shot with his stick.

"Honestly, I didn't know what I was doing there for a while," Edvinsson said. "But yeah, I felt something touch my stick, and there was the puck, and then I was just trying to lay on the puck for a while there. So it was a lot happening that shift."

Following a brief spell to be checked out by the training staff, Edvinsson was quickly back in action.

"Oh, that's some magical stuff from the trainers back there," Edvinsson said. "I'm not gonna spread the rumor about that, but yeah, that's all credit to them for being quick and helping me get back there."

And wouldn't you know, Edvinsson beat Toronto goalie Dennis Hildeby with a sweet deke move to net the overtime winner in Detroit's 3-2 victory.

"I saw the opportunity," Edvinsson said. The goalie was out, and the Toronto player fell. I just took the opportunity, and yeah, put it into the net."
