With the 2016 NHL Entry Draft just days away trade talk is starting to pick up in the NHL.
As such TSN has put out a big board of 30 names that could be in play this weekend. Among the players featured on their list is New Jersey Devils defenseman Damon Severson.
A handful of other intriguing names have joined the list: Anaheim’s Cam Fowler, New Jersey’s Damon Severson, Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky, Toronto’s Tyler Bozak and the Rangers’ Derek Stepan.
While the Devils are in no position to make players untouchable - everyone should be available for the right price - I don't particularly like seeing Severson's name on that list.
Last year he went through some growing pains, and seemed to be in John Hynes' dog house from Day 1 on, but in my opinion he is one of the least expendable players on the roster.
Despite being under utilized, and playing for an extremely low scoring team, Severson still led Devils' blue liners in points and was tied for 4th on the team in assists.
I am fully confident in saying there isn't a defenseman in the Devils' organization that possesses the kind of skating ability and offensive upside that Severson does.
If the Devils can parlay Severson and an asset or two into Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, for example, that is something that would be worth their while. In saying that I wouldn't head into the weekend set on trading a 21-year-old blue liner for whatever the team can get; especially when there isn't anybody like him in the organization.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
