Defenseman Tyson Barrie recently signed a four-year contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche worth $5.5 million per season.
In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on the deal.

I don't love the term - I think the Avalanche would have been better served putting up a couple extra bucks for another year or two of service - but I think Barrie at $5.5 million is excellent value.
Over the last two seasons Barrie has recorded 25 goals and 102 points. The only other defensemen to match (or better) those totals: Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Kris Letang, Roman Josi and Mark Giordano.
Barrie is keeping elite company and, at 25, that is likely to continue moving forward.
I think the Avs did very well getting him at that price point.
James Tanner I think it's a pretty good deal.
Comparatively, he's younger and cheaper than Yandle, they get him for his whole prime and don't have to pay him into his 30s.
I'd rather have Barrie than Josi, but that's not to say he's the greatest at actual defense. However, I think for the cap hit and term, this is probably a contract that is perfectly fair for both player and team.
However, if I was Colorado, I would have wanted a couple extra years in exchange for a lower cap hit.
