I absolutely love this deal for the Nashville Predators.
In P.K. Subban they are getting the more prolific point producer, the better player in possession, the better skater, the younger player, and the guy who isn't signed until 2026 making ridiculous money.
By almost every measurement Subban is better than Weber and that's unlikely to change moving forward.
Well done, David Poile.
Jason Lewis Just awful for Montreal. Yea, you save that $1.3 a mil hit going from Subban to Weber, but Weber is aged 30 and signed for TEN MORE YEARS. Ten more years at 7+ million dollars.
Not to mention Weber is on the decline, and not as good of a defenseman in terms of driving the play or possessing the puck. Subban does way more to help his team than Weber.
Nashville got the younger, better player in the deal straight up. They also managed to get out from under what would have been a devastating contract in about four or maybe even three years. I cannot fathom how this deal happened from a Montreal standpoint.
James Tanner It's a terrible trade. Montreal is a joke - they have one of the top ten defenseman in the NHL who also doubles as the NHL's most likable and marketable star, and they trade him?
For a player who is almost 31, who is in obvious decline, who has one of the worst contracts ever and who will no longer have Ellis, Ekholm and Josi to make him look good. Not saying Weber is a bad player, but he is not the top-five Norris Trophy candidate he used to be.
This is one of the worst trades I have ever seen. I don't understand how a GM has so much autonomy that the owners wouldn't step in and fire him before allowing such a bad trade.
Montreal is a worse team today than they were yesterday and they will just get worse as Weber declines. This trade is an incomprehensible, unmitigated disaster. It would have been preferable to trade Subban for a bunch of expiring contracts.
Marc Bergevin is a joke of a GM and the Canadiens will regret this for years and years.
