Like we’ve seen so often this season, the Canadiens dominated the first period but failed to convert on their many opportunities and the Jets took the lead. Even worst, they scored a 2nd one early in the middle frame. Thankfully, Nick Suzuki gave everyone a glimmer of hope by making it 2-1 before Trevor Lewis gave Winnipeg back their 2-goal lead. At that stage, many were ready to wave the white flag, but not this depleted Habs team.
Without Price, Gallagher, Byron, Tatar, Drouin and now Weber (injured early on the trip out west - upper body), the kids stood up to score 4 in a row. Cole Caufield looked like a one-man firing squad out there, taking 7 shots, 4 of which reached the goal. On a line with Evans and Lehkonen, he looked very comfortable tonight and deservedly, Lehkonen got the 2nd goal which ignited the team. Tonight, even though they were the least used line, they shone bright. Armia, Suzuki and Toffoli (in an empty net) completed the 5-3 score.
Great offensive game from Suzuki as well with 2 goals and an assist including the game-winning goal on the power-play. His line with Toffoli and Armia also excelled. Big game as well from Jeff Petry who showed off his smooth skating tonight and got 4 shots on goal, none of which went in, but he stepped up in Weber’s absence. Romanov had a tough night at the office, but Ben Chiarot compensated by delivering a solid performance.

Most importantly tonight though, the Habs got knocked down repeatedly, but they got back up again and showed character. It definitely wasn’t a great game for Jake Allen, but he shut the door after the 3rd goal and for once, he got the offensive support he deserved which has been cruelly lacking this season.

After this game, the Habs are now only 4 points behind the Jets with a game in hand and tonight, Winnipeg lost a 6th game in a row. At the back, the Flames are still in the Canadiens’ rear-view mirror, but with 7 games to go for both teams, they are now 6 points from the last playoffs berth. Tomorrow, the Habs will take on the Senators and it will be interesting to see if Ducharme decides to give Allen some rest by giving another start to Primeau.
Comme nous l’avons vu si souvent cette saison, les Canadiens ont dominé la première période mais n’ont pas réussi à convertir l’une de leurs nombreuses chances et les Jets ont pris l’avance. Pis encore, ils ont marqué tôt en 2e période. Heureusement, Nick Suzuki a donné une lueur d’espoir en inscrivant le CH au pointage mais Trevor Lewis a fait 3-1 pour redonner leur avance de 2 buts aux Jets. à ce moment-là , plusieurs étaient prêts à agiter le drapeau blanc, mais pas cette version amochée du CH.
Sans Price, Gallagher, Byron, Tatar, Drouin et maintenant Weber (blessé au haut du corps au début du voyage dans l’ouest), les jeunes ont répondu présents en marquant 4 buts en ligne. Cole Caufield avait l’air d’un peloton d’exécution à lui seul ce soir, dirigeant 7 tirs vers le filet, 4 desquels l’ont atteint. Sur un trio avec Evans et Lehkonen, il semblait très confortable ce soir et, de façon bien méritée, c’est Lehkonen qui a marqué le 2e but qui a pour ainsi dire enflammé l’équipe. Ce soir, même s’ils ont été la ligne la moins utilisée, ils ont brillé de tous leurs feux. Armia, Suzuki et Toffoli (dans un filet désert) on complété la marque de 5-3.
Un très bon match offensif pour Suzuki également, qui a récolté 2 buts et une passe, incluant le but gagnant sur le jeu de puissance. Son trio complété par Toffoli et Armia a lui aussi excellé. Gros match aussi pour Jeff Petry qui a fait de belles démonstrations de patinage et obtenu 4 tirs au but ce soir, aucun n’a trouvé le fond du filet, mais en l’absence de Weber, il s’est levé. Romanov a connu un match plus difficile, mais Ben Chiarot a compensé avec une solide performance.

Plus important encore ce soir par contre, les Canadiens ont plié les genoux à quelques reprises mais ils se sont toujours relevés et ont fait preuve de beaucoup de caractère. Ce ne fut définitivement pas un bon match pour Jake Allen, mais il a fermé la porte après le 3e but et pour une fois, il a reçu le support offensif qu’il méritait, ce qui a manqué cruellement à de nombreuses reprises cette saison.

Après ce match, les Habs ont maintenant seulement 4 points de retard sur les Jets avec un match en main et ce soir, Winnipeg a perdu un 6e match en ligne. Derrière, les Flames sont toujours dans le rétroviseur du CH, mais avec 7 matchs à jouer pour les 2 équipes, ils sont maintenant à 6 points de la dernière place donnant accès aux séries. Demain, les Habs affronteront les Sénateurs et ce sera intéressant de voir si Ducharme décide d’accorder un repos à Allen en donnant un autre départ à Primeau.
