Senators Sign Tierney; Grade Dorion's Offseason (senators)

As first reported by Bruce Garrioch, the Ottawa Senators have signed forward Chris Tierney to a two-year contract extension, carrying an average annual value of $3.5M. The signing is likely to be the team’s last piece of major business this offseason, with all the key restricted free agents signed, trades made, and the unrestricted free agent market explored.

Again, this deal is a smart piece of work for Pierre Dorion and the rest of his management group. Both the term and dollar value are very, very reasonable considering the team’s long-term plans and what Tierney brings in the short-term. This is a player who solidifies the middle of the ice for the team, and who can help to insulate prospects coming up from Belleville or elsewhere. He’s not going to light the world on fire with offensive totals, but he’s going to provide competent, NHL-quality minutes:
