Seeking to fix what ails them (Red Wings)

After a day off to lick their wounds from their fourth straight loss and fourth overtime setback of the season, the Detroit Red Wings set out Monday to fix what ails them. Much of Monday’s practice for the team that is 0-4 in overtime this season was devoted to working on three-on-three hockey. “Today, the practice was more to get used to the situation,… Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “When you get into those situations in the game, it’s good that you have been practicing on it. Most of the time, three-on-three it’s not doing a mistake or taking a bad shot, so the puck turns over to the other side.… While from a fan perspective the attraction of three-on-three hockey is hoping to see teams trade chances for the entire length of the five-minute overtime period, or at least until someone scores, that’s the last thing a team wants to do if success is the objective. Instead of going full-tilt on the attack, patience is the virtue that the Wings must embrace in OT. “The ones we have lost have basically been odd-man rushes,… Zetterberg said. “There is a good chance if a goalie makes a save there is going to be an odd-man rush the other way. “There is a little gambling, but the safer you can play and wait for your chances, you’ll have a bigger success rate.… Any thought of system play also goes out the window during the three-on-three session. It really is every man for himself. “There’s three guys on the ice, everyone just has to worry about one guy and kind of hope that no one gets beat and just go from there,… explained Detroit forward Andreas Athanasiou. No matter what they do, the vast open ice ensures than many scoring opportunities will come. “Everyone’s going to get a chance almost all the time,… Athanasiou said. In three-on-three,there’s going to be some sort of chance, so you kind of just have to be patient, wait for your opportunity.… And when that chance arrives, you have to take it. “You can’t really miss the net,… Athanasiou said. “It’s going right back the other way almost every time for an odd-man rush or a breakaway if you miss that net, so you’ve got to make sure everything’s high-percentage.… Daley Update Don’t expect to see defenseman Trevor Daley (neck injury) in action when the Wings tangle with the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. “He has not been cleared for tomorrow,… Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “I would list Daley as of right now out for tomorrow.… Daley wasn’t ready to count himself down and out, however. “We’ll see how it reacts, how it settles down tonight and how it feels tomorrow,… Daley said.
