MacKinnon named to All-Star team (Avalanche)

Hey, the Avalanche have an NHL All-Star. Well, so does every other team.

Center Nathan MacKinnon was among the 11 players named to the Central Division team for the 3-on-3 format for the Jan. 29 All-Star tournament at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The skills competition will be held Jan. 28.

Six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies were named to each of the four division teams.

Like the last-place Avalanche, MacKinnon has had a disappointing season, though he leads the team in scoring with 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 39 games. He had gone four games without a point before collecting an assist and the overtime goal in Friday's 2-1 win against the New York Islanders.

The Avalanche have two wins in their past 12 games, and MacKinnon had the winning goal in both; he scored Dec. 23 in a 2-1 overtime win in Chicago.

This is the first All-Star selection for MacKinnon, 21, who was the first pick in the 2013 NHL draft. He won the Calder Trophy as the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 with after getting 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in 82 games.

His production has fallen off since, in part because of injuries. He had 14-24-38 in 64 games in 2014-15, and 21-31-52 in 72 games last season.
