The Carolina Hurricanes fell to the New York Islanders at home yesterday, losing 6-2.
The Hurricanes didn’t start as strong as they would’ve liked and there wasn’t as much of an urgent forecheck as usual. They were outshot 9-7 and near the end of the opening frame, Brent Burns got caught at the offensive line and the Islanders went down on an odd-man rush, with Oliver Wahlstrom taking a pass from Mathew Barzal to score.
Carolina did come out a lot stronger in the second frame though and were generating some chances – then midway through the period, off a great give-and-go play, Martin Necas scored to tie the game. However, later in the frame, Jalen Chatfield had the puck taken off him right in front of the Hurricanes' net and Matt Martin capitalized from a good spot, reinstating New York’s lead.
The Hurricanes responded right away though, with Brent Burns’ point shot going off in off an Islanders defenseman only about a minute later, tying the game yet again. However, under a minute after that, the Islanders came down ice and Mathew Barzal got the puck to Josh Bailey, who outwaited Andersen to score, and Carolina was back down by a goal, going into the second intermission.
The third period didn’t go any better for Carolina, and after giving up some chances early, Brock Nelson scored four minutes into the frame to double New York’s lead. Then midway through the frame, Nelson struck again off another pass from Anthony Beauvillier, making it a 5-2 game. Zach Parise then buried an empty netter later, securing a 6-2 win for New York.
Despite putting 35 shots on goal, it was obviously far from the Hurricanes’ best game. Perhaps the long break between games had an impact but Carolina was making a lot of mistakes and their defensive zone coverage left a lot to be desired. Despite giving up five goals, Andersen also really can’t be faulted for any of them – they were just good chances.
It’s a disappointing result at home, with Carolina missing out on a chance to separate themselves from a lot of other teams in the Metropolitan Division standings. They’ll be right back in action today though, as they face the Philadelphia Flyers.

A big piece of news yesterday aside from the game was Ethan Bear being traded to the Vancouver Canucks. Along with Bear, the Hurricanes sent forward Lane Pederson to Vancouver, receiving a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft in exchange.

Pederson was originally acquired as part of the Brent Burns trade this summer. He’s 25 years old and was pointless in four games with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.
I’ll try to do a more in-depth article on the deal soon but as quick note, it’s obviously not a lot to get back for Bear. As recently as last season, he was a candidate for a top-four role with Carolina and is still just 25 years old. Also factor in the Hurricanes had to retain salary and they really didn’t get much of a return.
That said, while I still think Bear has upside, he had basically become the eighth defenseman with the Hurricanes and hadn’t even played a game with the team this season. With the deal, they clear cap space and at least get an asset in return.
