The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ve signed defenseman Grigorii Dronov to a one-year contract, which carries a $770,000 cap hit.

Dronov is 24 years old and has spent his entire career in Russia to this point. The defenseman played just six KHL games last season and has been assigned to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. He was attending training camp on a professional tryout.

With the addition of Dronov, the Hurricanes are continuing to improve upon their strong organizational defensive depth. He’s still young and we’ll get a better idea of where his ceiling may be this season, in his first year of North American hockey.
