Homecoming time for Pickard (Avalanche)

Fresh off two more losses at home, the Avalanche play in Winnipeg on Sunday to begin a two-game road trip.

Here are the GAME NOTES. Calvin Pickard starts in goal in his hometown for the first time in his NHL career.

"I always love going back to Winnipeg, it's home for me," Pickard told the team website on Saturday. "I live there in the summers, all the family and friends are there. It's always a fun environment to play in Winnipeg. I'm definitely looking forward to getting on the plane and getting there and have a nice home cooked meal and get back to work.

"It's going to be nice to have the people that have supported me all the way through at the game. They're all pretty big Jets fans, but I think (Sunday) they'll be Avalanche fans, which will be nice for us. It will be fun."

Semyon Varlamov practiced Saturday after missing two games with a groin injury and is expected to start Tuesday in Minnesota.

The Avalanche (11-17-1) went 0-for-6 on power plays Friday in a 3-1 loss to Florida and are 2-for-18 in the past five games.

The Jets (14-16-3) ended a four-game losing streak Thursday with a 4-3 shootout win against the Panthers. They're 1-for-14 on power plays in five games and have allowed eight power-play goals in 16 shorthanded situations in the past four games.
