2016 Stanley Cup Champions (Penguins)

The 2016 Stanley Cup Champions are the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Here is the call from Penguins legend Mike Lange

How rewarding to see a team that plays fun hockey win it all. Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins. You did it right.

The Penguins played to win. Being up one goal in the third period against a team with their backs to the wall usually results in absorbing insane shot volume. Pittsburgh out attempted the Sharks 18-15 in the third period. They played to win. They won.

This is the fourth Stanley Cup for the franchise. Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr led the way for the first two. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have now matched those two legends.

There have been severe ups and downs the past seven years (to the date) but the major pieces were always in place for this to happen. The Penguins have always had the hardest to acquire pieces. They were finally able to fill out the roster in a way that saw every single individual contribute to the team’s success in some way. Speed and skill. It’s a hell of a thing.

Sidney Crosby is your Conn Smythe Trophy winner. There were certainly arguments to be made for a number of players but the captain ultimately won the award. Was this a career achievement award? Maybe. But he was great during the playoffs and is great.

Phil Kessel. Stanley Cup Champion. What a thing.

Mario Lemieux will have his name on the Stanley Cup for the fourth time. It seems fitting that he was able to raise the Cup in San Jose considering the amount of carnage he levied on the Sharks during his career.

Kris Letang has dealt with so much hardship the past few years. What a game he had. He is the straw that stirs the drink for the Penguins.

Matt Murray bounced back yet again. The 22 year old backstopped his team all the way to a championship.

Pascal Dupuis :)

Plenty more in the days to come.
