"I'll take 'you've got to be kidding me' for $200 Alex".
"What player did the Jets extend for 3 years with almost 50% raise?"
"Who is Chris Thorburn?"
That's exactly what the hockey club announced tonight in probably the most unlikely signing anyone would expect. Three more years of a guy who's value is measured in how happy he keeps Evander Kane in the Jets locker room. No it's not that creepy but it is a ridiculous signing.
Funny enough, during an injury plagued series of games Thorburn spent some time on the second line. He looked odd but the idea of a body like his to do that role was appealing except it needed skill. Thorburn had 2 goals and 9 assists in 55 games last season. In his last contract he has played 169 games for Winnipeg and scored 8 goals and 18 assists. This is not skill. This is blind loyalty to the guy who saved your butt in a bar fight once and now you think you owe him a life debt of service.
It gets worse Jets fans. This is a team who says they cannot afford or will not afford the luxury of using buyouts. The last two deals the Jets have signed have been for a total of seven years and 14.1 million dollars!!!!! Buying out Pavelec was only going to cost 8 million...remember that because apparently character has a price, a very steep price.
When it comes to character though I guess we can overlook what the Jets are getting on the ice with these two guys.
"I'll take 'Famous movie quotes' for $400 please Alex"
"What were Steve Martin and John Candy told when driving down the highway"
"What is 'YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!!!!!!!'"
That's this team right now, the Jets are a plane without a flight plan and captain who wants to use recycled parts in the engines.
Oh this should be fun tomorrow.
(for the record I don't begrudge Thorburn a thing. He's a good guy and deserves to earn the money offered to him. It's the last part that's the problem.)
