The red hot Washington Capitals will invade Buffalo on tonight.
On Saturday night, Braden Holtby stopped 29 of 30 shots to earn his NHL-leading 22nd win of the season. Holtby has posted a 14-0-1 record in his last 16 games with one shutout, a 1.85 GAA and a .940 save percentage. It was his 10th consecutive decision on home ice on Saturday.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Holtby is the first NHL goaltender to win 10 straight home-game decisions in one season since Minnesota's Josh Harding and Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury each posted 10 straight home-ice wins in 2013-14. Holtby leads all NHL goalies with 22 wins and 1.92 GAA. He ranks fifth in save percentage (.932).
Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Holtby ranks tied for first in the NHL in wins (109) and tied for third in shutouts (18).
Holtby can be credited with the Capitals having won seven consecutive games to improve their record to 26-6-2 (54 points) this season. Their 26-6-2 record marks the team’s best start in franchise history.
Washington has now earned at least one point in 15 of its last 16 games. Their combined record from November 21-December 26 is now 14-1-1. The Caps are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. When your team's goal differential is +36 you are going to win a lot of games. The Washington offense has scored 108 goals for. Their D has only allowed 72 goals against in 34 games played.
The Capitals are 12-3-1 on the road this season.
Ovechkin and company are 19-4-0 against the Eastern Conference opponents this season.

DONE DEAL : @ben_scrivens to the @CanadiensMTL for @zkassian9 pic.twitter.com/KD5rpoGKim
— TradedNHLPortrait (@TradedNHLPlayer) December 28, 2015Zack Kassian has blazed quite a trail for himself in his brief NHL career.
The former first rounder of the Buffalo Sabres couldn't find consistency in Buffalo and was traded to Vancouver for Cody Hodgson.
In Van City, Kassian showed glimpses of power and passion, however, lost his mojo and was traded to Montreal for Habs fan favorite Brandon Prust.
Kassian ran afoul of the law in October when he was involved in an early morning auto accident. Kassian was the passenger in a vehicle driven by a 20 year old.
Kassian was referred to the NHL substance abuse program.
On December 16, he was reinstated following time in Stage Two of the NHL's substance abuse program and was then promptly placed on waivers by the Canadiens.
Kassian enrolled in the program shortly after he was involved in an early-morning single-car crash back in October. The 24-year-old broke his foot and his nose as a result of the crash, and Montreal GM Marc Bergevin blasted Kassian for a "lack of character" following the accident.
He went unclaimed on waivers, and the Canadiens sent Kassian down to the St. John Ice Caps. However, Montreal GM Marc Bergevin instructed Kassian to NOT report to AHL St. John.
On Saturday night, during his Saturday Headlines segment on HNIC, Elliotte Friedman suggested a Kassian to Edmonton trade because Peter Chiarelli tried to trade for Kassian when he was GM of the Boston Bruins.
When the NHL trade freeze thawed at 12:01 am on Monday morning, Kassian was free to move to the Oilers.
My Take:
I've always been a big fan of Kassian. I spent a considerable amount of time around him and Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF world Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo. Kassian played on a line with Marcus Foligno and Ryan Johansen and was a physical force in that tourney. He was always a pleasure to speak with when he played in AHL Rochester and in Buffalo when he finally made his NHL debut. Kassian always expected more of himself and would tell me how he wanted to find the consistency and create the same reputation inside the NHL as then Boston heavyweight Milan Lucic.
I think that Kassian will be a great body guard for Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Nail Yakupov and the Edmonton Oilers.
I wish Kassian the best of luck in his sobriety.

— Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) December 28, 2015The Montreal Canadiens have been having a dreadful time winning games in December. The injury to Carey Price has thrown the Habs for a real loop as they given back the huge lead in points that they once owned in the Atlantic Division playoff race. On Sunday night, the Floroda Panthers won their sixth game in a row and are now in first place in the Atlantic The Boston Bruins are also right there.
The Habs now have five goalies when you count Price, Scrivens, Mike Condon, Dustin Tokarski and prospect Zac Fucale.
Scrivens is a solid back-up/insurance policy for the struggling Habs. He will be UFA on July 1.
The Oilers will absorb 24% of Scrivens' contract.
