According to Eilliotte Friedman, it’s a likely possibility that San Jose tried to acquire a worse goaltender than Antti Niemi.
17. In July, Canucks GM Jim Benning said he could have traded Ryan Miller. Best intel I could find indicated the likeliest possibility was San Jose. The Sharks went out and got Martin Jones, as Benning is committed to Miller.(Friedman's 30 Thoughts)
The fact that this is even being floated around disgusts me. Ryan Miller! Since 2012, Antti Niemi has a better five-on-five save percentage than Ryan Miller – and he costs $1.5 million less (AAV) on his new deal than Miller does. If this is true then the San Jose Sharks have an even bigger issue with general manager Doug Wilson than previously thought.
Martin Jones, compared to Ryan Miller, is a gold star addition.
As much as I detest the role that I fear Joel Ward is going to be overcast in, he’s a solid depth signing – no question. That wouldn’t be possible – or the Paul Martin deal wouldn’t be possible – had the Sharks actually tried to acquire the over-rated and overpaid, Ryan Miller.
What this says to me, and maybe I’m overreacting, is that the San Jose Sharks have no idea what they’re doing. We use analytics, we don’t use analytics; we sign Frazer McLaren, we try to acquire Ryan Miller. The whole situation grows increasingly worrisome with each passing news tidbit.
The theme of 2015-2016 might just be ‘Let’s see what happens.’
