The Washington Capitals have invited 32-year-old NHL veteran Derek Roy to training camp on a professional tryout. Roy, who spent last season in Edmonton and Nashville, has bounced around the last few years with stops in Vancouver, Dallas and St. Louis after spending seven years in Buffalo.
The invitation is a no-risk move for the Caps who are hoping to fill the middle of the bottom six, especially since Nicklas Backstrom might be late in joining the team as he recovers from off-season hip surgery. With the departure of Eric Fehr this summer to Pittsburgh, the Caps were looking for a veteran presence to center the third line.
Roy would bring a veteran presence and a good two-way game, especially under Barry Trotz.
The only problem is, if Roy makes a good impression, the Caps would have to get creative in fitting him under the cap.
What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?
